The Canada Revenue Agency offers two instructor-led educational programs and one self-teaching educational program, free of charge, that address Canada's tax system and help teach basic tax preparation skills.
Instructor-led programs
Responsible Citizenship and Canada's Tax System
Helps Canadian students learn and understand where their tax dollars go.
For students:
- Provides basic information about the tax system
- Examines where tax dollars go
- Explores the relationship between income taxes and Canadians' quality of life
- Builds awareness of issues related to the underground economy and its impact on our society
For educators:
- Consists of 300 minutes of in-class instruction and student exercises
- Designed to meet a wide range of teaching and learning preferences
- Flexible - can be either a stand-alone teaching resource or an introduction to Teaching Taxes
- Fully downloadable lesson plans and resources
Teaching Taxes Program
Introduces high school and post-secondary students to Canada's tax system and teaches them how to prepare a tax return.
For students:
- Practical - offers students the real life skill set of personal tax preparation
- Increases awareness of the possible entitlements and tax credits an individual may receive
For educators:
- Consists of 180 minutes of in-class instruction and student exercises
- Flexible - can be taught in economics, accounting, business, mathematics, consumer education, social studies, and second language courses
- Supports sustainable development with fully downloadable teacher's manual - future updates will be clearly identified for subsequent download
- Offers the choice to download the student workbook or to order on line
- Trusted source of information - used by educators since 1971
Self-teaching program
Learning About Taxes
Provides the fundamentals of the Canadian tax system and teaches how to complete a basic income tax return for individuals.
For students:
- Online, independent, self-paced learning modules
- Designed for first time tax filers or those wanting to know more about Canada's tax system
- Shows students how to complete a basic tax return
- Consists of approximately 60 to 90 minutes of course time
