What's new for Corporation Internet Filing

2009-09-18
Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED)

As of October 6, 2009, Corporation Internet Filing will be available to corporations involved in Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) activities.

Note that with this improvement, updated software must be used to ensure that the complete file/claim is received. If the updated software is not used, the processing of the SR&ED returns will be delayed. Currently, not all versions of software have been modified to transmit SR&ED returns. Only versions approved in October 2009 and subsequent, which support SR&ED claims, can be used.

Corporations filing an SR&ED claim for tax years ending in 2010 or later that meet the criteria for mandatory Internet filing will also be required to Internet file their T2 Corporation Income Tax return using CRA approved commercial software.

Mandatory Internet Filing for T2 Returns

As announced in the 2009 Budget Statement, beginning with tax years ending after 2009, corporations with gross revenues in excess of $1 million will be required to Internet file their T2 Corporation Income Tax Return using CRA approved commercial software. The following exceptions apply:

  • Insurance Corporations;
  • Non-resident corporations;
  • Corporations reporting in functional currency; and,
  • Corporations that are exempt from tax payable under section 149 of the Income Tax Act.

Please note that all corporations are encouraged to Internet file their T2 corporation income tax return. Electronic filing not only increases the efficiency of government while delivering service and value to taxpayers but it also reduces the impact on the environment by eliminating the use of paper. Attention corporations subject to Ontario tax!!

If you are used to having to file separate corporation income tax returns to the CRA and to the Ontario Ministry of Revenue (OMoR), wouldn't it be great if you could meet both your federal and corporate Ontario tax return filing obligations with a single internet transaction?

You can for the 2009 tax year! CRA-approved 2009 T2 Corporation Income Tax Return (T2 Return) software packages make it easy by incorporating all Ontario tax and credit calculations and schedules, as well as the Ontario Corporations Information Act Annual Return. Being able to file provincial and federal taxes together online all at once will be a big time-saver for Ontario businesses, not to mention the benefits to the environment. So, for Ontario corporations it's "Good-bye paper!", and "Hello" to the single harmonized electronic T2 return!

Some commercial T2 Corporation Income Tax Return software packages for the 2009 tax year have already been approved by the CRA. Check with your software provider about the availability of the new Ontario-ready package.
