Softwood Lumber Registration

Every person who exports softwood lumber products to the United States is required to register for the softwood lumber products export charge. This includes exporters located in the Atlantic Provinces, Yukon, Northwest Territories or Nunavut, as well as those exporters listed on the "exempt persons" schedule.

An "exempt persons" is a person whose name appears on the list set out in the Schedule of Exempt Persons of the Softwood Lumber Products Export Charge Act, 2006. These exempt persons are not required to pay the export charge.

How to register

To register with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), fill out the B253 Registration Form, and any of the applicable supplementary forms below:

The Business Number (BN) is used to identify your softwood lumber account. The BN is a unique federal government numbering system that identifies your business and the various accounts you maintain. The first nine digits of your BN (your registration number) should be clearly indicated on these forms. You will already have a BN if you have a GST/HST, payroll, or corporate income tax account.

You can register for a Business Number by completing Sections A1 to A4 of RC1 Request for a Business Number (BN). Also, you can call the CRA at one of the numbers below to request that a form be mailed or faxed to you. For more information, see Business Number (BN) registration.

Completed forms can be returned by mail or faxed to the Softwood Lumber Division at:
