Our bilingual toll-free telephone service provides information about registered charities. This service is available weekdays (except statutory holidays) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time.

Requests for Information

In releasing private and confidential information about a registered charity, the confidentiality provisions (section 241) of the Income Tax Act, have to be followed. This is the case for an informal request and for a formal access-to-information request.

Informal requests can generally be answered sooner than an access-to-information request. If, at any time, requestors feel the information received through an informal request is not complete, they can make a formal access-to-information request.

Under the Income Tax Act, information contained in the public part of a registered charity's information return is available to the public. Certain other information, as identified in Summary Policy CSP-C12 (relating to a charity that was at any time a registered charity) is also available to the public.

The public part of a registered charity's information return is available on our Web site through the Charities Listings. Other information can be requested by calling toll free 1-800-267-2384. Requests can also be made by fax to 613-954-8037, or in writing to the Client Service Section of the Charities Directorate.
