What if I can't find the charity I am looking for?

There are several reasons you may have trouble finding a specific registered charity in the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Charities Listings, such as:

  • the registered charity uses a different operating name than the name it is registered under;
  • the registered charity has only recently been registered and the information is not yet posted to the CRA Charities Listings; or
  • the organization is not a registered charity. Some organizations, although authorized to issue official donation receipts for income tax purposes, are not considered registered charities. These organizations are known as qualified donees, which are not included in the Charities Listings.

If you are unable to find a specific charity on the CRA Charities Listings, you have several options:

  1. First, search the list of revoked charities and annulled charities. If you find the charity named on either of these lists, it is no longer a registered charity and cannot issue official donation receipts for income tax purposes.
  2. If the charity is not named on either of these lists, contact the organization to confirm that it is a charity registered with the CRA.
  3. If the organization confirms that it is registered with the CRA, ask for its Registration Number and the name that it is registered under. Return to the CRA Charities Listings to conduct a new search using this information. For more tips on searching by a charity's name, go to Search tips.
  4. If, after completing the three steps above, you suspect that there is a problem with the CRA Charities Listings, please contact the CRA.
