Are you eligible for the disability tax credit (DTC)?

The disability amount is a non-refundable tax credit used to reduce tax payable for eligible individuals. If you are eligible for the DTC, you may be able to claim the disability amount on your Income Tax and Benefit Return.

If you receive Canada Pension Plan or Quebec Pension Plan disability benefits, workers' compensation benefits, or other types of disability or insurance benefits, it does not necessarily mean you are eligible for the DTC. These programs have other purposes and different criteria, such as an individual's inability to work.

How to claim the disability amount?

Eligible individuals can claim the disability amount by entering it on the applicable line of their tax return:

A dependant can be your or your spouse's or common-law partner's parent, grand-parent, child, grandchild, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, niece or nephew.
